thatG8fairlane54 Posted August 4 Posted August 4 Hi guys, started playing around with PCMTEC recently trying to learn to tune. From what I understand about the MBT and Knock ignition tables, the minimum spark timing (with some other mumbo jumbo) is used. My question is. if the MBT is lower than the knock limit on the factory tune, is it not worth touching those cells to try and get more timing? Engine is 5.4 SOHC 230kw. On a side note, are the factory knock sensors adequate if staying N/A? Thanks guys Quote

thatG8fairlane54 Posted September 3 Author Posted September 3 perfect, thanks Roland. I purchased a course from HPA academy and mostly figured out what was going on. Quote
Puffwagon Posted September 3 Posted September 3 Here's something I trialed with my turbo barra on the dyno. At WOT and low load, with nearly no boost, around 1500rpm iirc, the stock timing is around 15 degrees. I added timing up to 20 degrees with no difference in knock or in roller torque. This is one case of the MBT being pretty good from factory, obviously this is just one instance of it, however based on this, I wouldn't bother looking for more gains over the MBT table. There were gains in the borderline knock table in these areas but not much. If you had your own dyno or a shitload of money to hire one, along with a fuel system to support methanol, you could dial in your own MBT table, there might be gains in other models etc. Quote
thatG8fairlane54 Posted September 3 Author Posted September 3 thanks Puffwagon, exactly the information I wanted to know Quote
Puffwagon Posted September 3 Posted September 3 No worries, happy to share stories from time to time. It's just a small snippet of my experience and my opinion of it. There may be gains to be had elsewhere, I don't how how extensively Ford tuned the various engines over the years. #grainofsalt 1 Quote
