False knock BA falcon

Recommended Posts

G'day guys,

I'm having a rather significant issue with false knock. Before I get too far I have knock ears (kind of ghetto ones, but can definitely clearly hear knock when it is actually knocking). Regularly pulling out 8 degrees up a hill at a load of 0.5-0.65 (still well within vacuum). Generally pulls a fair bit of timing under load (4 degs) but I've got it running super rich (about 0.8 lambda in boost) and timing has been set to 6 degs in boost, yet is still pulling timing sometimes into the negatives. Any ideas where to start? Tried thicker oil and it did have some improvement, but thinking potentially dud knock sensor?

P.S I have very significantly detuned the knock sensors, which has improved it but there areas that are still terrible!

Put a mic in the engine bay and some headphones on. You might have something like a intercooler piping banging on the chassis setting it off.

I'll double check, but looks all fine to me. Plus shouldn't I pick that up on my knock ears?

That's why I said microphone instead of knock ears (turn off all filtering if your knock ears let you).

Your knock ears probably have different filtering than Ford use, they are also not attached in exactly the same place. So there might be drive train banging, suspension, pipework, engine mounts or piston/rotating assembly noise that is getting picked up as knock that you can't currently hear.
